A Smug Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed His Identity
The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty desert shooting range, baking the dry earth until waves of heat shimmered over the targets. It was the annual regional marksmanship competition, a high-stakes event dominated by active-duty soldiers and elite tactical teams. Among the crowd of young, heavily geared competitors stood Edward. At sixty-nine years old, with weathered skin and thick silver hair, he looked entirely out of place in his simple, faded brown field jacket. Yet, there was an unmistakable stillness about him, a quiet gravity that went unnoticed by the arrogant young men around him.
The Arrogant Challenger
As Edward walked toward the registration counter to sign in, his path was suddenly blocked. Hunter, a smug thirty-three-year-old sergeant clad in state-of-the-art dark tactical gear, stepped forward with a mocking grin. He looked Edward up and down, taking in the old man's worn boots and the vintage rifle case in his hand. Hunter folded his arms, letting out a sharp chuckle.
"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"Hunter asked, his voice dripping with condescension. A few of his fellow soldiers laughed, waiting to see the old man retreat in embarrassment.

Edward did not flinch. He slowly set his rifle case down and began rolling up his right sleeve to prepare for the heat. As the fabric moved upward, it revealed a dark, faded tattoo of a black wolf on his forearm. Hunter glanced at it and dismissed it with another loud laugh, entirely oblivious to its historical significance. Edward remained silent, his expression stoic. He calmly lifted his scoped bolt-action rifle, a weapon that looked like a relic compared to Hunter's high-tech gear. Without taking a warm-up, Edward aligned his sight, breathed out, and fired once. The deafening crack echoed through the canyon. Before anyone could check the target, Edward looked directly at Hunter and said,
"I only need one shot."The range monitor flashed the result: a perfect, dead-center bullseye at five hundred yards. Hunter's smirk vanished instantly, a tear of sudden shock and humiliation rolling down his cheek.
