A Smug Young Soldier Mocked An Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed His True Identity
The Confrontation at the Range
The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty gravel of the shooting range, casting harsh shadows across the targets. Walter, a seventy-three-year-old veteran with short white hair and a weathered face, walked slowly toward the registration counter. He wore a faded dark canvas jacket, his quiet demeanor contrasting sharply with the loud, boisterous group of active-duty soldiers nearby.
Among them was Ryan, a smug thirty-one-year-old soldier clad in a pristine, dark camo tactical suit. Sensing an easy target for his arrogance, Ryan stepped in front of Walter, a mocking smile spreading across his face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Ryan asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
Walter didn't flinch. As he adjusted the strap of his gear bag, his sleeve slid back, revealing a stark black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Ryan glanced at it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms. He saw only an old man with old ink. But Walter remained calm, his focus entirely on the range ahead.
Setting up his scoped rifle at the lane, Walter took a slow, deep breath. The tremor that usually occupied his aged hands disappeared entirely. He aligned the crosshairs with the extreme long-range target, eight hundred yards away. Without hesitation, he squeezed the trigger once. The deafening crack echoed off the canyon walls.
"I only need one shot," Walter said softly, lowering the rifle.
Ryan sneered and looked through his spotting scope, expecting to see a complete miss. Instead, his jaw dropped. The bullet had pierced the absolute dead center of the bullseye. He stared in absolute disbelief, his face draining of color.
"What? Impossible!" Ryan stammered, a single tear of shock and humiliation rolling down his cheek beneath his olive military cap.
