The Ghost of the Desert

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty desert shooting range, waves of heat rising from the parched earth. George, a rugged seventy-two-year-old veteran with a silver buzzcut and a weathered tan field coat, walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the registration desk. His hands, calloused from decades of hard work and military service, trembled slightly as he reached into his pocket.

Behind the desk stood Derek, a thirty-two-year-old soldier wearing a pristine navy tactical vest. Derek looked George up and down, a smug, mocking smile spreading across his face. He didn't see a hero; he only saw an old man who had outlived his usefulness.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Derek asked, his voice dripping with condescension.

A few onlookers chuckled, but George remained silent. As he reached out to sign the registration ledger, his sleeve pulled back, revealing a faded black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Derek glanced at it and laughed dismissively, folding his arms. "Nice dog," he sneered.

George didn't reply. He calmly walked to the firing line, picked up a heavy scoped rifle, and took a deep breath. In an instant, the trembling in his hands vanished. He became as still as stone. He aimed at a target positioned at an extreme distance, a distance most of the younger soldiers avoided.

With absolute calm, George pulled the trigger. A single, thunderous crack echoed across the canyon. He lowered the rifle and looked directly at Derek.

"I only need one shot," George said softly.

The range master gasped as he looked through his spotting scope. "Bullseye! Dead center!" he yelled. Derek’s face drained of color. He grabbed a pair of binoculars, his hands now shaking. "What? Impossible!" he stammered, a single tear of disbelief rolling down his cheek under his tan military cap. A senior officer nearby stared in awe, whispering, "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
