The Ghost of the Desert

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty shooting range, baking the gravel beneath my worn boots. At seventy years old, my joints ached with every step, but my hands remained as steady as they had been decades ago. I wore my faded brown military jacket, a relic of a past I had tried to forget, as I walked toward the registration desk for the annual veteran's marksmanship competition.

Before I could even reach the clipboard, a shadow fell over me. It was Marcus, a young, smug soldier in a pristine charcoal tactical outfit. He was the reigning champion of the base, his chest puffed out with the arrogance of youth and unearned privilege. He looked at my frayed sleeves and my grey stubble, a mocking smile playing on his lips.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

A few young recruits standing nearby chuckled. I didn't answer. I simply reached out to sign the registration sheet, pulling back my right sleeve to free my wrist. As the fabric slid up, it revealed a faded, black ink tattoo of a howling wolf on my forearm.

Marcus’s eyes flicked to the mark. For a fraction of a second, his smirk faltered, replaced by a shadow of doubt. But his arrogance quickly returned, and he folded his arms dismissively. "A wolf? What, did you get that at some cheap parlor to look tough?" he sneered.

I didn't say a word. I picked up the standard-issue scoped rifle resting on the bench. The target was set at an extreme eight hundred yards, swaying slightly in the harsh crosswind. Marcus watched me, expecting a failure that would seal my humiliation.

I took a single, deep breath, letting the world fade away. I squeezed the trigger.

The crack of the rifle shattered the silence. Through his spotting scope, Marcus’s face went entirely pale. The bullet had struck the absolute dead center of the bullseye. He stepped back, a single tear of disbelief rolling down his cheek beneath his black military cap.

"What? Impossible!"

From behind us, a deep, weathered voice broke the silence. "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
