Previously: When a cocky recruit tried to corner Sergeant Amanda Vance in the base showers, he thought she was an easy target. He quickly learned that disrespect has painful consequences.

The Weight of Authority

Amanda released her grip, allowing Tyler to slide down the wet tile floor. He collapsed in a heap, coughing violently and clutching his red neck. His squadmates rushed to his side, but none of them dared to look Amanda in the eye. Tyler glared up at her, his face twisted in a mixture of deep humiliation and burning rage. "You're going to pay for this, Vance," he hissed, spitting water onto the floor. "My uncle is the Chief of Staff. I'll make sure you're stripped of your rank and thrown out of this army."

Amanda didn't say another word. She simply walked past them, her head held high. But she knew the battle was far from over. In the military, political connections could often crush merit, and Tyler’s family had deep roots in the high command.

The following morning, the inevitable summons arrived. Amanda was ordered to report directly to the commanding officer's headquarters. When she walked in, she found Captain Reynolds sitting behind his desk, looking visibly stressed. Standing beside him was Colonel Miller, Tyler’s uncle, a man notorious for pulling strings to protect his family's reputation. Tyler stood just behind his uncle, a smug, victorious grin back on his face.

"Sergeant Vance," Captain Reynolds began, his tone heavy with regret. "Private Tyler has filed a formal complaint of assault against you. His squadmates have signed statements confirming that you attacked him unprovoked in the shower room."

Colonel Miller stepped forward, his chest puffed out, flashing his rows of medals. "This is a disgrace to the uniform," the Colonel boomed. "You laid hands on an enlisted soldier. I will personally oversee your court-martial. Your career is officially over, Vance."

Amanda stood at perfect, rigid attention. Despite the immense pressure and the threat of a dishonorable discharge, she didn't show a single ounce of fear. She looked directly at the Colonel, her voice steady and clear.

"With all due respect, Colonel Miller," Amanda said, "you might want to review the full security footage and check the base commander's family registry before you make a decision you cannot undo."

Colonel Miller laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "Are you trying to threaten me, Sergeant? You have no power here." But before he could finish his sentence, the heavy oak door to the office swung open, and the entire room fell dead silent.
