The Smug Champion

The air inside the Sterling Indoor Shooting Range was heavy with the sharp scent of gunpowder and the tense, competitive energy of the regional qualifiers. At twenty-eight, Leo was the undisputed king of the facility. Wearing his custom grey athletic shirt, he stood surrounded by a small crowd of admirers, basking in the glory of his latest near-perfect target. To him, the sport was a young man’s game—a display of raw reflexes and modern precision.

When the target slid back, every single bullet had passed through the exact center of the bullseye, carving out a single, ragged hole.

The smug smile vanished from Leo's face. Martha lowered her weapon, turned her head slightly, and met his stunned gaze.

"I came here to compete," she said.

She walked over to the registration desk and signed the official tournament entry form. An onlooker peering over her shoulder gasped, "Impossible!" Arthur, the sixty-one-year-old head official in a blue blazer, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the signature. His face drained of color. He lowered his glasses, whispering, "Wait, that name..."
