The Legend of the Ghost Unit

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty shooting range, baking the cracked earth until waves of heat distorted the horizon. Frank, a rugged sixty-five-year-old veteran with a thick grey beard and a weathered face, walked slowly toward the registration counter. His heavy khaki canvas jacket bore no insignias, and his worn leather boots kicked up small puffs of dust with every step. To the untrained eye, he was just an old man looking to relive his youth. But beneath that stoic exterior lay a lifetime of classified secrets.

Standing near the counter was Kyle, a twenty-seven-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a pristine black utility vest and a tactical military cap. Kyle was surrounded by his peers, basking in their admiration. When he saw Frank approaching, a smug, mocking smile spread across his face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Kyle asked, his voice dripping with condescension. His friends laughed dismissively, eyeing the older man's simple gear. Frank didn't flinch. Instead, he slowly rolled back the sleeve of his jacket, revealing a faded but distinct black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Kyle's laughter faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly folded his arms and scoffed, trying to hide his sudden unease.

Without saying a word, Frank picked up a standard scoped bolt-action rifle from the rack. He loaded a single round into the chamber with a crisp, practiced click. He looked at Kyle with calm, piercing eyes.

"I only need one shot,"

Frank said quietly. He raised the rifle, exhaled slowly, and pulled the trigger. The deafening crack of the shot echoed through the canyon. A second later, the metallic clang of a bullseye at seven hundred yards rang out. Kyle stood frozen, his eyes wide in absolute shock. "What? Impossible!" he stammered, a single tear of pure humiliation and fear rolling down his cheek as the range master whispered, "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
