The Forgotten Founder

The grand glass doors of the luxury jewelry boutique slid open with a whisper, welcoming Clara into the gleaming, air-conditioned showroom. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a warm, elegant glow over the rows of pristine glass display cases. To anyone else, it was a temple of modern wealth. To Clara, an eighty-two-year-old woman in a simple wheelchair, it was a museum of memories. She rolled herself toward the central counter, her frail hands resting on a worn, scratched vintage watch. It had stopped ticking that morning, and with it, the only heartbeat she had left of her late husband, Arthur.

A young assistant named Liam, dressed in a sharp navy vest, smiled warmly as she approached. "How can I help you today, ma'am?" he asked gently. Clara placed the antique watch onto the glass counter. It looked painfully out of place next to the diamond-encrusted chronographs on display. Before Liam could inspect it, the sharp click of high heels echoed across the marble floor. Sarah, the store's stern manager, marched over in her flawless black designer suit.

Sarah took one look at Clara’s faded woolen cardigan and the battered watch. Her expression hardened into a sneer.

"We don't repair trash here,"
she said, her voice dripping with condescension. Liam looked shocked. He picked up the watch, carefully dusting it with a microfiber cloth. "To her, it matters," Liam insisted, his voice quiet but firm as he gently fastened the vintage timepiece back onto Clara's wrist.

Sarah leaned in, her eyes flashing with anger.

"You're going to lose your job over this, Liam,"
she whispered venomously. Clara’s heart ached, not for herself, but for the kind young man. She slowly reached into her purse and pulled out a yellowed envelope containing an old black-and-white photograph. "My husband wore it here," Clara said softly, holding up the picture of a young watchmaker. Liam looked from the photo to the grand portrait of the store's founder on the wall. "Is he the founder?" Liam gasped. Clara looked up, her eyes shining. "And I am his wife," she replied, leaving them utterly stunned.
