Previously: When Sergeant John Miller violently dragged a civilian woman out of the base mess hall, he thought he was enforcing rules. He had no idea he just ruined his entire career.

The Badge and the Threat

Sergeant John Miller let out a harsh, mocking laugh, looking around at the gathered soldiers as if expecting them to join in. "A career-ending mistake? Who do you think you are, sweetheart? I run this battalion's floor, and you are trespassing on federal property," he sneered, reaching toward his utility belt for handcuffs.

Private David finally found his voice, stepping forward nervously. "Sergeant, maybe we should just check her ID first. Let's not make a scene."

"Shut up, Private! I don't need your advice on how to handle intruders," John snapped, stepping closer to Emily to use his imposing physical presence to intimidate her.

But Emily didn't flinch. Instead, she reached calmly into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out a leather badge holder. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she flipped it open. The gold and blue seal of the Department of Defense Inspector General gleamed under the harsh mess hall lights. Right beneath the seal was her name and her civil service rank: GS-15, a civilian grade equivalent to a full Colonel.

The sneer vanished from John's face, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness. The silence in the mess hall deepened, heavy with the realization of what had just occurred. A sergeant had just physically assaulted a high-ranking federal investigator.

"Private David," Emily commanded, her voice steady and authoritative. "Go fetch the Military Police. Right now."

David didn't hesitate. He dropped his tray onto a nearby table and sprinted out of the mess hall. Left alone with Emily, John's panic began to mutate into something dangerous. He realized his career, his pension, and his freedom were instantly on the line. He stepped closer, whispering so only she could hear.

"If you ruin my life over this, I swear to God, you won't walk off this base in one piece," he hissed, a desperate threat gleaming in his eyes.

Before Emily could reply, the heavy double doors of the mess hall swung open, and the Base Commander himself strode in, his eyes blazing with fury.
