A Soldier Fights To Save His Late Brother's Traumatized K9 From Execution
Previously: When a grieving soldier fights to save his late brother's military dog from being euthanized, a sudden prison alarm triggers the dog's trauma—with shocking consequences.
The Trigger
The training pen was a smaller, enclosed area of the yard, surrounded by reinforced steel bars. Marcus stood just outside the gate, his hand resting instinctively near his sidearm. Thomas walked to the center of the pen, taking a deep breath, and unclipped Rex's leash. He wanted the Warden to see that Rex could be calm when given space.
Free from the restriction of the leash, Rex began to pace frantically. His nose worked overtime, sniffing the sterile, dusty air. Suddenly, a heavy metal gate on the far side of the facility slammed shut with a thunderous boom. The sound echoed violently off the concrete walls.

Rex immediately froze. His pupils dilated, and a low, terrifying growl rattled deep within his chest. The dog was no longer in a prison yard; in his mind, he was back in the dusty ruins of a war zone, surrounded by fire and smoke. He began to spin, snapping wildly at the air as panic took over.
"Thomas, step back!" Marcus shouted, his hand gripping the latch of the pen. "He's turning!"
Ignoring the danger, Thomas stepped closer to the thrashing dog. He began to speak in a soft, rhythmic whisper, reciting the old country lullaby his brother Sean used to hum to Rex during thunderstorms. Slowly, the frantic spinning ceased. Rex's ears perked up, and he looked at Thomas with a sudden, heartbreaking recognition. He took a fragile step forward.
But before Thomas could bridge the gap, the prison's emergency siren began to wail. A piercing, high-pitched screech tore through the air, accompanied by flashing red lights. The sudden onslaught of noise completely shattered Rex's fragile composure. Snapping completely, the massive German Shepherd bypassed Thomas entirely and lunged directly toward Warden Marcus, his jaws aimed straight for the man's throat.
