Previously: Returning early from his deployment, soldier Justin expected a warm welcome. Instead, he walked in on his wife and best friend in an intimate moment, uncovering a heart-wrenching secret.

The Confrontation in the Rain

The silence in the living room was deafening. Justin felt the walls closing in on him as he looked from Rachel's tear-streaked face to Christopher's guilt-ridden expression. The two people he trusted most in the world had apparently crossed a line he never thought possible. Anger, hot and volatile, quickly replaced the icy shock in his veins.

"Get out," Justin whispered, his voice trembling with a dangerous edge. "Both of you, just get out."
"Justin, please, man, just let us talk," Christopher said, taking a cautious step forward. "It’s not what you think. You have to listen to Rachel."

But Justin was past the point of listening. The sight of them jumping apart on the couch was burned into his retinas. He refused to hear the standard excuses of loneliness and distance. Without another word, Justin grabbed his duffle bag, spun on his heel, and stormed out of the house, ignoring Rachel’s desperate cries as she followed him to the porch.

He threw himself into his truck, slamming the door to shut out the world. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white, tears of hot betrayal finally spilling down his cheeks. He felt utterly foolish. While he had been facing danger abroad, they had been finding comfort in each other’s arms.

Before he could put the truck in reverse, a figure approached through the pouring rain. It was Christopher. He didn't look angry; he looked devastated. Christopher tapped on the driver's side window. Justin rolled it down, ready to strike his former friend, but Christopher didn't shrink back. Instead, he reached inside his jacket and produced a thick white folder, thrusting it through the window.

"You think we betrayed you, Justin, but you're wrong," Christopher said, his voice cracking. "Rachel made me promise not to tell you. She didn't want you to lose focus while you were deployed. But you need to see this."

Justin stared at the folder, his anger faltering. With trembling hands, he opened it under the truck's cabin light, his eyes scanning the medical documents inside.
