Previously: When Army Sergeant Daniel returned home early from deployment, he expected a warm welcome. Instead, he walked into a nightmare that shattered his family forever.

A Web of Deceit

Rebecca scrambled backward on the wet floor, her face pale as she tried to find her voice.

"Daniel! You’re home early! It’s... it’s not what it looks like, I swear!"
she stammered, trying to mask her panic with a nervous smile. She stood up slowly, smoothing down her damp olive sweater.
"Your mother had an episode. She was screaming and threw her lunch on the floor. I was just trying to clean up, and she fell. I was trying to snap her out of it!"

Daniel ignored his wife's desperate lies, his focus entirely on his sobbing mother. He gently helped Irene to her feet and guided her to the living room, wrapping her in a warm, dry blanket. As he did, his heart sank. He noticed dark purple bruises on his mother's frail wrists.

"She hurts me, Daniel,"
Irene whispered, her voice cracking with fear.
"She told me if I told you, she would put me in a dark place and never let me see you again."

Rage burned hot in Daniel’s chest. He walked back into the kitchen where Rebecca was frantically trying to mop up the evidence.

"How could you do this?"
Daniel demanded, his voice dangerously calm.
"I trusted you. I sent you my entire paycheck to care for her!"

Seeing that her sweet act was no longer working, Rebecca’s expression turned cold and arrogant. She leaned against the kitchen counter and crossed her arms.

"Go ahead and scream, Daniel. But you can't do anything about it,"
she sneered.
"Six months ago, your mother signed a power of attorney and transferred the deed of this house to my name. If you try to divorce me or call the cops, I will evict her immediately. And if you make a scene, I'll tell your commanding officer you came home suffering from PTSD and attacked me. Who do you think they’ll believe?"
