The Impossible Double

The departure terminal of JFK International Airport was a chaotic sea of rushing bodies, rolling suitcases, and loud flight announcements. Sarah clutched her eight-year-old son Leo’s hand tightly as she scanned the massive, glowing flight boards. Distracted for just a brief moment by a boarding pass notification on her phone, she let go of Leo's hand. When she looked back down, the space beside her was empty.

Panic surged through Sarah’s chest instantly. She spun around, her voice rising above the airport din as she called out his name. Pushing through a dense crowd of travelers near the departure screens, she finally spotted him. Leo was standing completely still near a concrete pillar, staring intently at another little boy sitting by a trash bin.

As Sarah rushed closer, the breath was knocked clean out of her lungs. The boy standing in front of Leo was his absolute mirror image. He had the same dark hair, the same deep brown eyes, and the same delicate facial structure. But the contrast between them was devastating. Leo was dressed in a clean, striped polo shirt and neat khakis. The other boy was covered in charcoal smudges, wearing nothing but frayed, dirty rags, his bare feet caked in grime.

Leo looked at the boy in utter bewilderment.

"Wait... Why do you look like me? I thought I was the only one,"

he asked, his voice trembling.

Sarah ran up, tears streaming down her face.

"Rowan! Oh my god, where are you?"

she cried out in a daze, her mind scrambling to make sense of the impossible reality before her. Leo pointed at the dirty boy and asked,

"Mom, why does he have my same face?"

Sarah’s hands shook violently as she reached down toward the boy. Around his neck, hanging from a dirty, frayed string, was a rusted metal tag. She flipped it over. Engraved in crude, rough letters was the text: BABY #2. Sarah gasped, her face draining of all color as she whispered,
