Previously: Ten years after being forced to abandon his mother to protect her, James returns to her humble street food cart, only to find her facing eviction by the very people who tore them apart.

The Shadow of the Past

Before James could pull his mother into the embrace they had both desperately needed for ten years, the heavy silence was shattered. The harsh screech of tires drew the attention of nearby pedestrians as a sleek, black luxury town car pulled up directly against the curb, illegally parking in front of the food cart. The rear door swung open, and a man in an immaculate, expensive tailored suit stepped out onto the pavement. It was Thomas, James’s wealthy uncle, the patriarch of the family that had torn them apart a decade ago.

Thomas carried a thick legal folder, a cruel, triumphant smirk plastered across his face. He didn't even glance at James; instead, his cold, arrogant eyes locked onto Margaret. "Your time is up, Margaret," Thomas sneered, tossing the heavy documents onto the stainless-steel counter of her food cart.

"The city has officially revoked your operating permit as of five minutes ago. Furthermore, my development firm has just acquired this entire block. You have ten minutes to pack up your trash and vacate the premises, or the police will arrest you for trespassing."

Margaret’s face drained of color. She clutched her chest, leaning against the cart for support. The very nightmare she had feared for years was finally happening. But then, Thomas’s eyes drifted to James, his smirk widening with mock surprise. "Well, look who decided to crawl back from exile. Did you think you could play the hero, James? You are still just a penniless boy who abandoned his mother for a ticket out of the country. You have nothing."

James stood his ground, his expression remarkably calm despite the fury burning in his chest. "I didn't abandon her, Thomas," James replied, his voice dangerously low. "I left because you threatened to destroy her life if I stayed. I left to build a shield powerful enough to protect her from monsters like you." He pulled out his phone, ready to make a call that would change everything.
