Previously: When eighteen-year-old Claire is brutally kicked out of her home by her stepfather Robert, she thinks she has lost everything. But a hidden truth in her backpack changes everything.

Sitting on the curb under the flickering light of a streetlamp, Claire opened her backpack. Her hands shook as she pulled out the folded documents she had managed to smuggle out of Robert’s desk. They were bank statements from her mother's savings account, along with legal papers for their home. Robert had been systematically draining Amy’s inheritance and was in the process of transferring the house title to his name alone. He was preparing to leave Amy with nothing.

A Dangerous Return

Claire knew she couldn't run away. She had to show her mother the truth before Robert could completely ruin them. Waiting until she saw Robert's car leave the driveway, Claire crept back to the house. She slipped through the unlocked back door and found her mother sitting in the dark living room, weeping silently.

"Claire, you shouldn't be here," Amy whispered, panic in her voice. "If Robert comes back and finds you..."

Claire knelt in front of her mother, pulling the documents from her backpack. "Look at this, Mom," she urged, spreading the papers on the coffee table. "He's stealing from you. He took my college fund, and he's trying to take the house. That's why he threw me out. He caught me finding these."

Amy stared at the financial statements, her eyes widening as the harsh reality of her husband's betrayal finally pierced through years of gaslighting. But before they could even process the shock, the heavy sound of the front door opening echoed through the house. Robert had returned early. He had realized the bank statements were missing and knew exactly where Claire would go.

He marched into the living room, his eyes locking onto the papers on the table. A sinister, confident smirk spread across his face. He didn't look worried; instead, he pulled a small plastic bag of white powder from his pocket. "You think anyone will believe a troubled teenager over me?" he sneered. "The police are already on their way. I called them to report a break-in. And when they search your backpack, Claire, they’re going to find this."
