A Gift with Strings Attached

The powder blue banquet room of the Grandview Hotel was bathed in the warm glow of afternoon light. Elegant white lace tablecloths were adorned with delicate floral centerpieces, and the gentle clinking of champagne flutes filled the air. It was the perfect celebration for my graduation from law school. I stood in the center of the room, still wearing my navy dress and the black graduation cap that symbolized years of sleepless nights and relentless studying. Yet, despite the festive atmosphere, a heavy weight sat in my chest.

My mother had passed away when I was ten, and my father followed her just before I started college. Since then, my stepmother, Helen, had controlled everything. She was a master of public relations, always presenting herself to our high-society circle as the selfless savior who raised her orphaned stepdaughter. Today was no different. Dressed in an elegant beige blazer with her short blonde crop styled perfectly, she commanded the room.

Suddenly, Helen stepped toward me, a warm, maternal smile plastered across her face. The chatter in the room subsided as guests turned to watch. "My dear Chloe," Helen said, her voice carrying beautifully across the room. "You have made us all so proud. I have a special gift for you." She reached into her bag and handed me a soft, cream-colored envelope.

I looked at her in genuine surprise. For years, Helen had begrudged me every dime of tuition, claiming my father's estate had dwindled to nothing. To see her offering something so public and elegant caught me off guard. Slowly, I opened the envelope. Inside was a deed—the deed to my late mother’s beloved coastal cottage, a place filled with my happiest childhood memories that Helen had locked away for a decade. My face lit up with an ecstatic, joyful grin. For a brief second, I believed she finally cared. "Oh, Helen, thank you!" I gasped, pulling her into a tight hug.

"You deserve it, darling," Helen whispered in my ear, her grip tightening. "Just sign the acknowledgment slip inside, and the keys are yours."
