Previously: When Evelyn attended her stepsister's wedding, her arrogant stepmother tried to humiliate her military uniform. But a sudden shout from the back of the cathedral changed everything.

The Weight of Authority

The color drained instantly from Beatrice's face as the words echoed through the high stone arches. She stood up, her expensive hat wobbling slightly as she looked around in confusion. At the altar, the groom, Richard, froze. Beside him, his father, Arthur—a retired military colonel who now ran a prominent defense contracting firm—turned around. When Arthur's eyes landed on Evelyn's uniform, his jaw slackened, and his face turned a pale, sweaty white.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He stepped out of his pew and snapped a crisp, trembling salute.

Beatrice grabbed her husband's arm, her voice rising to a shrill, desperate pitch.

"Arthur, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind? This is Evelyn! She's a nobody! She probably rented that ridiculous outfit to ruin my daughter Chloe's wedding!"

Arthur turned on his wife, his eyes wide with genuine terror.

"Shut your mouth, Beatrice! This is Brigadier General Evelyn Vance. She is the newly appointed head of the military defense procurement committee. She holds our entire family's livelihood in her hands!"

The revelation hit the wedding guests like a physical blow. Richard stared at his former fiancée, his chest heaving as the weight of his mistake crashed down on him. He had abandoned Evelyn, calling her plain and boring, to marry Chloe for her family's social standing. Now, he realized the woman he had discarded held the power to destroy everything his family had built. Evelyn stood before them, a figure of absolute authority, looking at the people who had mocked her for years with nothing but cool indifference.
