"General Vance," Sterling said, his voice echoing clearly. "It is an honor to finally meet you in person. My son told me you might attend, but I didn't think we'd be graced by a true hero of the Pentagon."
Martha tried to scramble out of her seat, attempting to salvage her pride. "General Sterling! Surely there is a mistake. Katherine is just... she's just my stepdaughter. She has always been a bit difficult—"
"Silence, Martha," Sterling interrupted, his tone sharp as steel. "General Vance is one of the most decorated intelligence officers in the country. You should be on your knees thanking her for her service, not insulting her in the house of God."

It was the exact active investigation her department had been running into illegal military contracting fraud.
"My son is about to marry your sister using a false identity and stolen assets," Sterling whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "He has been using my name and your family's social standing to launder millions. If this wedding happens, Sarah will be legally tied to his crimes. You are the only one who can stop this."
