The Reading of the Will

The atmosphere inside the grand dining room of the Vance estate was suffocating. Under the warm glow of the massive brass chandelier, the mahogany table seemed to stretch on forever. My father, Arthur Vance, had been laid to rest only twenty-four hours earlier, yet his widow, Eleanor, was already wearing a triumphant smirk. She adjusted her heavy gold chain necklace, looking at me with cold, calculated hostility.

"Get out of my house!" Eleanor suddenly shrieked, slamming her hands flat against the polished wood. "You have never belonged here, Clara, and now that your father is gone, you have exactly one hour to pack your bags and leave."

My step-siblings giggled softly, refusing to meet my eyes. Tears of grief and betrayal stung my face as I pushed back my chair, running toward the patio doors. The sheer cruelty of my family left me breathless. But just as my hand touched the brass handle of the glass doors, a tall, imposing figure stepped into my path. It was Richard, my father’s lifelong friend and the estate’s executor, looking immaculate in his charcoal grey three-piece suit.

He held a thick red leather binder in his hands, his expression grim but resolute. "Your father left you this, Clara," Richard said, his voice cutting through the tense silence of the room. "Your father bequeathed this in his last will."

My hands shook as I opened the binder. Inside were the official, notarized deeds to the entire estate. Tears streamed down my face as Richard looked directly at the stunned family. "This house has been yours for years," he added quietly.

We marched back into the dining room. Richard slammed the red binder onto the table, the loud thud echoing through the room. Eleanor’s face went pale. I stood tall, looking at the people who had just tried to throw me out. "Were all of you stealing from him?" I demanded.
