Previously: When Hazel fell from her family's luxury yacht, she thought it was an accident. But looking up from the freezing water, she realized the horrifying truth about her stepfamily.

The Final Judgment

Mr. Vance cleared his throat, looking at Richard with a mixture of pity and disdain. "I am glad you are safe, Hazel," the lawyer said. "Because your husband Arthur anticipated this exact greed from his son. He left a sealed codicil in his will, to be opened only in the event of your sudden disappearance or untimely death."

Richard stared at the lawyer, his voice trembling. "What are you talking about? The estate is mine if she's gone!"

"Actually, no," Mr. Vance replied, tapping the document. "Arthur knew of your gambling debts and your ruthless ambition, Richard. The codicil states that if Hazel should pass away or go missing under any circumstances before her seventy-fifth birthday, the entire estate, including all properties, trusts, and business holdings, is immediately and permanently donated to a maritime rescue charity. You and Alice would receive absolutely nothing."

Alice gasped, clutching her dark purple dress as the reality of their failure sank in. Richard collapsed onto the sofa, his face completely hollowed out by defeat. They had tried to murder Hazel for a fortune, only to ensure they would never see a single dime of it.

Hazel looked at her stepson, feeling no anger anymore, only a profound sense of pity. "I loved you like my own son, Richard," she whispered. "But your greed has cost you everything."

The police arrived shortly after, summoned by Thomas, who had waited outside. Richard and Alice were led away in handcuffs, facing charges of attempted murder and conspiracy. Hazel stood in her grand living room, finally feeling a true sense of peace. She knew she had a long road of healing ahead, but she was alive, free, and protected by the enduring love of her late husband.

True wealth is found in the love and loyalty we share, for greed will always destroy the very things we fight so desperately to steal.
