A Sudden Knock in the Night

The wind holed through the ancient oaks surrounding the estate, casting long, dancing shadows across the stone facade of the mansion. Inside, Victoria sat alone in the dim light of her study, her navy blue dress rustling slightly as she poured herself a cup of tea. It had been two years since her husband, Charles, had passed away, leaving her with a sprawling home and an emptiness she couldn't seem to fill. She cherished his memory, believing their thirty-year marriage had been a flawless fairy tale of devotion and love.

Suddenly, a heavy, desperate knock echoed from the foyer. Victoria frowned, glancing at the grandfather clock. It was nearly midnight. She walked slowly toward the massive wooden doors, her heart drumming against her ribs. When she flung the doors open, she gasped, stepping back in sheer shock.

Standing on the grand porch was a pale young man, his hands trembling as he cradled a small bundle wrapped in a soft, woolen blanket. Inside the blanket was a sleeping newborn baby. Victoria's breath caught in her throat. She stared at the child, then at the stranger's exhausted, haunted face.

"My God! Who are you?" Victoria whispered, her voice shaking in the cold night air.

The young man did not answer immediately. He took a ragged breath and reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a crumpled, handwritten envelope. He held it out to her, his eyes pleading.

"She said you would understand," he replied quietly, his voice cracking under the weight of some unseen grief.

With trembling fingers, Victoria took the envelope. She broke the wax seal and unfolded the letter inside. As her eyes scanned the elegant, handwritten script, the color drained from her face. The truth written on those pages was a nightmare she could never have prepared for.
