Amber eagerly walked inside the restaurant to thank her unexpected savior. Steven welcomed her warmly, pulling out a chair for her. As she ate the nourishing meal, she found herself pouring her heart out to him, explaining Greg's cruel abandonment and her terrifying lack of resources. Steven listened with deep empathy, promising to help her find temporary housing and even offering her an administrative role at his firm once she recovered from childbirth. For the first time in months, Amber felt safe.

However, that safety was short-lived. As they stepped out of the diner together, a sleek black sedan screeched to a halt at the curb. Greg laughed coldly, gesturing to the lawyer beside him.

"I don't care about you, Amber. But my family wants that baby. This is my attorney, and we are here to serve you custody papers. You have no home, no job, and no way to support a child. The court will hand him to us in a heartbeat."

Amber felt the world tilt. The threat of losing her unborn child was more than she could bear. But before she could collapse from panic, Steven stepped firmly between her and Greg, his protective stance radiating authority.

"I suggest you put those papers away," Steven said, his voice deadly calm. "Because you are dealing with me now."

Greg scoffed, demanding to know who Steven thought he was. When Steven revealed he was a senior partner at the city's most prestigious corporate law firm, Greg's arrogant smirk began to falter. Steven whispered a single sentence about Greg's family business that made Greg turn pale.
