The silence in the diner was deafening. Mark stared at the card, his jaw hanging open as Chloe looked on in confusion. The card bore the name of David Sterling—the founder and majority shareholder of Apex Holdings. Mark’s ultimate boss, the man who owned the very company he had bragged about working for.

"Mr. Sterling..."

Mark stammered, his voice cracking.

"I... I had no idea. Please, I was just joking—"

David raised a single hand, silencing him instantly.

"At Apex Holdings, we value integrity, empathy, and character,"

David said, his voice echoing in the quiet diner.

"A man who abandons his pregnant wife on the street has none of those things. As of this exact second, you are fired. Do not bother coming to the office tomorrow. Security will have your things packed."

Chloe gasped, dropping Mark’s arm in shock. Mark looked like his entire world had collapsed in an instant. He opened his mouth to beg, but the cold, unyielding look in David’s eyes told him there was no hope. Ruined and humiliated, Mark turned and hurried out of the diner, with Chloe chasing after him, already screaming at him about his sudden unemployment.

Lily sat in the booth, her jaw dropped, staring at the man who had just changed her life. David turned back to her, his harsh expression melting into a warm, fatherly smile. He sat back down and reached into his pocket, pulling out a pen and writing a phone number on a napkin.

"My wife and I run a foundation for single mothers,"

David said gently.

"We have a safe apartment ready for you tonight, and when you are ready, there is a job waiting for you at our headquarters. You and your baby will never have to worry again."
