Previously: When pregnant and homeless Jessica was caught eating scraps at a diner, a kind stranger bought her a meal. But her relief was cut short when her abusive ex-husband suddenly arrived.

Jessica sat in the warmth of the patio, savoring every bite of the hot meal Thomas had bought her. For a fleeting moment, the terror of her situation faded. But the peace did not last. A sleek, black luxury sedan pulled up violently to the curb. The door flew open, and out stepped David, Jessica's estranged husband, looking pristine in a tailored suit. Beside him was an older man carrying a leather briefcase. David’s eyes scanned the patio until they locked onto Jessica. A sneer curled on his lips as he marched toward her.

The Shadow of the Past

"Look at you, Jessica," David mocked, his voice dripping with venom. "From a suburban home to eating scraps like a stray dog. How the mighty have fallen."

Jessica trembled, her hand instinctively shielding her pregnant belly. The man beside David stepped forward, opening his briefcase to reveal a stack of legal documents. "Mrs. Miller, I am your husband's attorney," the man said coldly. "We have been looking for you. Your husband is offering a settlement. Sign these papers, relinquishing all parental rights to the child, and you will receive ten thousand dollars. Refuse, and we will ensure the state takes the child anyway due to your vagrancy."

Jessica’s heart shattered. David didn't even want the baby; he just wanted to destroy her completely. "I will never sign this," she whispered, her voice shaking but resolute. David grabbed her arm roughly, pulling her up. "You don't have a choice!" he snarled.

Before David could pull her any further, the diner door slammed open. Thomas stepped out, his presence suddenly towering and formidable. He placed a firm, heavy hand on David’s shoulder. "Take your hands off her right now," Thomas said, his voice ice-cold. David laughed nervously, but his attorney suddenly gasped, staring at Thomas's face. "Wait... are you Thomas Sterling? The Sterling Development Group?" the lawyer whispered, his face turning pale. David froze, realizing he had just crossed the most powerful man in the city.
