Previously: When injured Olivia tripped in a busy shopping mall, a cruel woman sneered at her. But the rugged stranger who rushed to help noticed a gold chain that changed everything.

The Shadows of the Past

The name hung in the air like a fragile glass ornament, threatening to shatter at any second. Olivia stared into the eyes of the rugged stranger, searching the weathered lines of his face. Beneath the beard and the hardened expression of a man who had lived a difficult life, she saw the boy who used to build fortresses out of blankets in their living room. It was him. Daniel was alive.

"Olivia," he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion he had clearly kept buried for a decade. "I can't believe it's you."

Before they could even touch, Victoria stepped between them, her high heels clicking sharply against the tile. "This is absurd," she snapped, grabbing Olivia's arm with a grip that was far too tight. "Olivia, we are leaving. I don't know what kind of game this homeless-looking man is playing, but we don't have time for scam artists."

Daniel stood up slowly. Standing at over six feet tall, his presence was suddenly intimidating. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, protective fury. "Take your hands off her," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Victoria scoffed, though she instinctively took a step back, releasing Olivia's arm. "Do you know who my family is? You don't want to threaten me, buddy."

Daniel let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Oh, I know exactly who your family is, Victoria. That's the whole problem." He turned to Olivia, helping her stand and handing her the crutches with a tenderness that made her throat tighten. "Olivia, we have to leave this place. If Victoria's father or her husband find out I'm in this city, none of us are safe. They are the reason I had to disappear ten years ago."

Olivia’s mind reeled. Her brother-in-law, Thomas, had always seemed distant, but Victoria's family was incredibly powerful in local real estate. To think they were connected to Daniel's disappearance sent a shiver of terror down her spine. "What are you talking about, Daniel?" she whispered.

"They set me up, Olivia," Daniel whispered back, his eyes scanning the mall entrance. "And they'll do it again if they know I'm back."
