Previously: Hungry and abandoned at eight months pregnant, Jessica was eating a discarded burger when a kind stranger intervened. She never expected their paths would cross again under shocking circumstances.

An Unexpected Sanctuary

That single meal was the beginning of a new chapter for Jessica. Along with the food, Thomas had left his business card with the cashier. He was the owner of a local shelter and a small bakery, and he offered her a safe place to stay and a job. Over the next month, Thomas became her rock. He helped her prepare for the baby, and when her daughter, Lily, was born, he was the first to hold her. Jessica finally felt safe, believing the worst of her life was behind her.

But the peace was short-lived. One afternoon, while Jessica was working at the bakery with Lily sleeping peacefully in her stroller, the bell above the door chimed. Jessica looked up, and her heart froze. Standing in the doorway was Marcus, her ex-husband, accompanied by a stern-looking man in an expensive suit carrying a briefcase.

Marcus sneered as he approached the counter.

"Did you really think you could hide my child from me, Jessica?"
he demanded. His lawyer stepped forward, handing Jessica a stack of legal documents.
"These are custody papers. My client is suing for full custody of the child. You are homeless and unfit, while Marcus has a stable home,"
the lawyer stated coldly. It turned out Marcus’s wealthy new wife could not have children, and they wanted to steal Lily away.

Jessica clutched Lily to her chest, sobbing and terrified. Just as she felt her world collapsing again, the back door of the bakery opened, and Thomas stepped out. He took one look at Marcus, and his face hardened into a mask of pure fury. Marcus, upon seeing Thomas, gasped and took a step back, his face turning pale.

"Thomas? What are you doing here?"
Marcus stammered, his confident demeanor instantly vanishing into thin air. It was clear that the two men shared a dark history that Jessica knew nothing about.
