Steven walked out of the restaurant and gently asked if he could join me. As I ate the warm food, the first real meal I had eaten in days, he listened intently as I poured my heart out. I told him about David, Eleanor’s cruel lies, and how I had been cast out onto the streets with nothing but the clothes on my back. But as I spoke, Steven’s face turned pale. Before we could digest this shocking revelation, a sleek black car screeched to a halt at the curb. David stepped out, his face twisted in fury. He marched over and grabbed my arm roughly.

"Get up, Amber! You're coming with me right now,"

he sneered. Steven immediately stood up, placing himself between us.

"Touch her again, and you will regret it,"

Steven warned. David laughed, pulling a legal document from his pocket just as police sirens began to wail in the distance.

"Go ahead, call the cops,"

David whispered with a venomous grin.

"I have court-ordered guardianship papers right here. She’s declared mentally incompetent, and she’s coming with me."
