I Asked a Wheelchair-Bound Stranger to Dance, Uncovering a Heartbreaking Family Secret
Previously: When Audrey asked Marcus, a handsome man in a wheelchair, for a dance at a charity gala, she expected a polite rejection. Instead, she uncovered a heartbreaking truth that tied their pasts together.
A Shadow in the Light
Audrey stared at him, completely bewildered.
"Yes, that's my name," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "How do you know who I am?"
The man took a deep breath, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"Ten years ago," he began softly. "There was a horrific car accident on Route 9. A young boy was trapped inside a burning vehicle."
A gasp escaped Audrey's lips. Her mind raced back to the most terrifying night of her life, when her younger brother, Leo, had nearly died.
"A stranger pulled him out," Audrey whispered, her hands shaking. "But a falling branch crushed the savior's spine before he could get away. We tried to find him, but his family hid him away. They told us he wanted nothing to do with us."
The man offered a sad, bittersweet smile.
"My name is Marcus Vance," he said. "I never wanted to hide from you. I was told your family blamed me for the accident and hated me."
Tears streamed down Audrey's face. The hero who had sacrificed his legs to save her brother was sitting right in front of her, poisoned by a decade of lies.
Before she could speak, a harsh, cold voice interrupted them.
"Marcus! What do you think you are doing?"
Audrey looked up to see Julian Vance, Marcus's wealthy and arrogant stepbrother. Julian sneered at Audrey before glaring down at Marcus.
"I told you to stay out of sight," Julian hissed. "You are embarrassing the family. And who is this gold-digger?"
"She is not a gold-digger!" Marcus protested, his voice trembling.
Julian laughed mockingly.
"Be quiet, Marcus. Remember who controls your trust fund. One more word, and I will cut off the funding for your specialized physical therapy. You'll be locked in your room forever."
Audrey felt a wave of cold fury. Julian was using Marcus's disability to keep him isolated and control the family fortune. She had to act, but one wrong move could destroy Marcus's only hope of recovery.
