Previously: When Leo stepped onto a dusty Texas ranch and calmed a notoriously aggressive Rottweiler with a whisper, the rancher realized this mysterious drifter held the key to his own tragic past.

The Ghost in the Kitchen

Unable to shake his disbelief, Mark invited the young stranger inside the cabin for a warm meal. The interior of the home was a time capsule of faded photographs and dusty furniture, carrying the heavy scent of old wood and unspoken grief. As they sat at the wooden kitchen table, Maya lay peacefully at Leo's feet, a sight that still made Mark rub his eyes in wonder.

Over bowls of hot stew, the silence between the two men began to soften. Mark, usually a man of few words, felt an strange, inexplicable comfort in the stranger's presence. He began to speak of his late wife, Sarah, who had passed away two years prior, and how the ranch had slowly fallen into ruin without her light.

"I wasn't always alone," Mark confessed, his voice cracking as he stared into his coffee. "I had a son once. Leo. He was a good kid, but I was too hard on him. After a terrible accident in the barn, I blamed him for everything. I chased him away. It's the biggest mistake of my life."

Leo gripped his spoon tightly, his heart pounding against his ribs. He looked at the fragile, broken man sitting across from him. This was the father who had banished him, now weeping with regret. Before Leo could find the words to reveal his true identity, the front door was violently kicked open.

Two men in sharp, expensive suits stepped into the cabin, their muddy boots staining the clean floor. They were representatives from a predatory land development firm that had been circling the struggling ranch like vultures.

"Time's up, Miller," the lead man sneered, throwing a foreclosure notice onto the table. "You missed the final deadline. The bank has sold your debt to us. You have twenty-four hours to pack your things and get off this land."

Mark went pale, his hands trembling violently. The ranch was all he had left of his family. Seeing his father's despair, Leo stood up, his eyes flashing with a protective fire.
