Previously: When Michelin-starred chef Henry finds a teenager messing with his signature scallop dish, anger turns to shock as the kid prepares a sauce only one other deceased man knew.

A Ghost in the Kitchen

Henry stared at the teenager, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Julian had been the true culinary genius of their family, killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident just weeks before they were set to open their dream restaurant. The recipe for the Midnight Glaze had never been written down; Julian had taken it to his grave. Henry had spent a decade trying to recreate it, failing every single time.

"Where did you get this?" Henry whispered, his voice trembling. "Who are you?"

The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn, oil-stained leather notebook. Henry recognized it instantly—it was Julian’s personal journal, missing since his funeral. "My name is Ryan," the boy said softly. "Julian was my father. My mother, Sarah, gave me this before she passed away last month. She told me the truth about who I was, and where I belonged."

Tears welled in Henry's eyes. He was looking at his nephew, the living legacy of his beloved brother. But before he could embrace the boy, the kitchen doors burst open. Marcus, Henry’s wealthy business partner and the sole financial backer of L'Etoile, strode in, flanked by two burly security guards.

"There he is!" Marcus snarled, pointing a finger at Ryan. "That kid broke into my private office upstairs and stole a highly confidential financial ledger! Guards, grab him and call the police!"

The guards lunged forward, grabbing Ryan arms and pinning him roughly against the stainless steel counter. The leather journal slipped from Ryan's hands, clattering to the floor. Henry stepped between them, his protective instincts flaring. "Marcus, wait! This is my brother's son!"

"I don't care who he is, he's a thief!" Marcus screamed, his face flushed with panic. "He has to be locked up!"

But Ryan, struggling against the guards' grip, looked directly at Henry and shouted, "He's not worried about a ledger, Uncle Henry! He's worried about what's inside it! Marcus didn't just steal my father's designs—he drove the car that killed him twelve years ago!"
