Previously: When Admiral James Vance spotted a young woman in a canvas jacket on his secure base, he expected a security breach—but her identity forced him to salute a ghost from his past.

A Reckoning in the Shadows

The heavy oak door of the Admiral's private office clicked shut, instantly sealing out the murmurs of the confused command staff. James leaned against his desk, the rigid posture of the military commander evaporating to reveal a tired, broken father.

"Claire," James breathed, his voice cracking. "You shouldn't have come. This base... it isn't safe for you. It never was."

Claire let out a bitter, humorless laugh. She paced the room, her eyes scanning the framed commendations and historical photographs that lined the walls. None of them featured her. None of them featured her mother.

"Safe?" Claire turned on him, her eyes flashing with decades of accumulated anger. "You left me in a foster home when I was five years old! I grew up thinking my father was a coward who couldn't bear the sight of his own daughter after my mother died. And now you salute me? You act like I'm some sort of fallen soldier!"

James closed his eyes, accepting her wrath as if it were a physical blow. When he opened them, they were filled with tears. He reached into a hidden compartment beneath his desk and pulled out a weathered, red folder marked with high-level classification stamps.

"I didn't abandon you, Claire. I hid you," James said softly, placing the folder on the desk. "Your mother wasn't killed in a standard car accident. She was a deep-cover operative who uncovered a massive conspiracy within our own intelligence networks. When they killed her, they came for you. The only way to keep you alive was to make the world—and the conspirators—believe you had vanished forever."

Claire stared at the file, her heart pounding in her chest. She stepped forward, her hand trembling as she opened it to see her own childhood photos alongside foreign surveillance reports.

Suddenly, the red emergency light on the Admiral's desk began to flash. The high-pitched wail of a security breach alarm echoed through the walls.

"Admiral!" a voice boomed from the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of combat boots. "We have an unauthorized data breach in progress. Step away from the civilian immediately!"
