Previously: When Admiral George Vance spotted a young woman in a windbreaker at the naval base, he expected an intruder. Instead, her response forced him to salute a ghost from his past.

The Secret in the Safe

The salute sent shockwaves through the gathered officers, but George didn't care. He lowered his hand and gestured for Ashley to follow him. Without a word, they walked through the heavy double doors of the administration building and into his private, wood-paneled office. Once the door clicked shut, isolating them from the whispering base, the tension in the room became thick enough to cut with a knife.

George stood behind his heavy oak desk, his hands trembling—a rare sight for a man known for his icy resolve in the face of danger.

"Ashley,"
he breathed, his eyes filling with tears.
"You look so much like your mother. I can't believe it's really you."

Ashley’s face hardened.

"Don't speak about my mother,"
she snapped, her voice trembling with years of built-up resentment.
"You abandoned us. You chose your career, your precious stars, and left her to raise me alone in poverty. I found her diary after she died last month. I know who you are, George."

The Admiral looked as if he had been struck.

"Abandoned you?"
he whispered.
"Ashley, no. That is not what happened. Twenty-three years ago, while I was deployed on a covert operation, I received an official government telegram. It stated that you and your mother had been killed in a tragic car accident."

Ashley stared at him, her breath catching.

"That's impossible. We lived in Ohio. My mother worked two jobs just to keep a roof over our heads."

To prove his words, George quickly stepped to a painting on the wall, swung it open to reveal a hidden wall safe, and retrieved a yellowed, classified folder. He handed it to Ashley. Inside were official death certificates, medical examiner reports, and a signed authorization order. Ashley gasped as she saw the name of the man who had signed off on the falsified documents: Vice Admiral Thomas Sterling, George's lifelong rival and current superior officer.
