Mrs. Finch Slid the Forged Papers Across the Mahogany Desk, Her Eyes Glinting with Greed

The Highgate Archival Registry Salon smelled of old leather and dust, but the tension in the air was sharp as a blade.

Mrs. Finch, a stout woman in a black satin dress that strained at the seams, stood beside the desk, her hand clamped around a check that could buy a small country.

She pushed a little boy forward—her grandson, Tommy, dressed in a velvet suit that looked borrowed and uncomfortable—and smiled at Lorenzo Moretti with the confidence of a woman who believed she had won.

Lorenzo, his silver hair swept back like a movie star's, studied the boy with cold, calculating eyes.

Beside him, Sofia clutched her sapphire earrings, her dark braided updo trembling with the strain of holding back tears.

"This is the child?" Lorenzo's voice was low, like distant thunder.

"Absolutely, Mr. Moretti," Mrs. Finch chirped, sliding the forged adoption papers across the desk. "Found her in a rural orphanage, just as you described. Barefoot, auburn curls, the ankle brace. She's your granddaughter."

But in the shadowed corner near two estate security officers, a real girl stood—six years old, with a mended wool vest and an ankle brace that creaked when she shifted.

Her name was Clara, and her auburn curls hung limp over a face streaked with old tears.

She watched Mrs. Finch with a silent, desperate intensity, her small hands clenched at her sides.

Mrs. Finch glanced back at Clara, a flicker of malice in her eyes, and whispered something sharp to the girl to stay put.

Then she turned back to Lorenzo, her voice oily and commanding: "Wire the reward money today."

The room held its breath. Lorenzo's pen hovered over the contract.

But Clara couldn't stay silent anymore. She limped half a step forward from the pillar, her lower lip trembling, and pointed a tiny finger at the heirloom locket resting on the desk—a golden pendant engraved with a star-rose.

"Turn the little golden key," she said, her voice barely a whisper, but it cut through the silence like a bell.

Lorenzo dropped his pen. The clatter echoed off the grey flagstone floor.

He turned, his eyes narrowing on the barefoot girl in the shadows, and walked past the sweating Mrs. Finch with Sofia at his side.

They knelt in front of Clara, and Lorenzo's voice cracked: "Wait... repeat what you said."

Clara swallowed, her gaze fixed on the locket. "The little golden key. It opens the locket. Mama said it would find me."

Sofia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "The locket—it was our daughter's."

Mrs. Finch sputtered, reaching for the papers, but the security officers stepped forward, blocking her path.

Lorenzo lifted the locket from the desk, his fingers trembling as he turned it over. There, hidden in the filigree, was a tiny keyhole.

Clara reached out with her small thumb and pressed a hidden latch. The locket clicked open, and a soft lullaby chimed—the same melody Sofia had hummed to her daughter a lifetime ago.

Sofia's eyes filled with tears as she saw the star-rose birthmark on Clara's shoulder, peeking through the torn wool of her vest. And on the inside of the locket, a baby hospital tag: "Clara Moretti."

Mrs. Finch's face drained of color. "That's—that's a trick!" she shrieked.

But Lorenzo was already on his feet, ripping the forged contract in half. He wrapped his arms around Clara and Sofia, pulling them into a fierce embrace, and his voice was iron as he looked at the guards: "Lock this scammer up tonight."

As the guards handcuffed Mrs. Finch, her grandson stood frozen, his eyes wide with confusion.

But Clara looked up at Lorenzo, her voice soft: "There's another one. A little boy. He's still there."

Lorenzo's heart stopped. "What do you mean?"

Clara bit her lip. "At the orphanage. They said I had a twin brother. They took him away."

Sofia clutched Clara tighter, and Lorenzo's mind raced. The case was far from closed.
