The Boy in the Alley

The autumn wind was biting, sweeping fallen leaves across the cold concrete of the city sidewalk. Clara pulled her navy blue wool coat tighter around her shoulders, her designer sunglasses shielding her eyes from the glare of the overcast sky. Beside her, her eight-year-old son, Leo, walked briskly, his small hand tucked securely in hers. Dressed in a smart charcoal sweater and neat trousers, Leo was the picture of a beloved, well-cared-for child. Clara smiled down at him, feeling a familiar wave of maternal pride. They were heading to their favorite downtown bakery, a simple weekly tradition they both cherished.

Suddenly, Leo stopped. He tugged sharply on Clara’s sleeve, his gaze locked on a dark alcove beside a brick building.

"Mom, that boy looks like me,"
he whispered, his voice tinged with confusion.

Clara chuckled softly, assuming it was merely the active imagination of an eight-year-old. But as she followed his pointing finger, the smile died on her lips. She slowly lowered her sunglasses, her heart leaping into her throat. Sitting on a discarded cardboard box was a boy who looked to be the exact same age as Leo. He wore a faded denim jacket, shivering in the damp air. But it was his face that made Clara’s breath catch. He had the same messy brown curls, the same deep hazel eyes, and the exact same tiny dimple on his left cheek. It was like looking at Leo's reflection in a warped, dusty mirror.

The boy in the denim jacket looked up, his eyes widening as he saw Leo. With trembling, dirty fingers, he reached inside his collar and pulled out a tarnished gold locket. He clicked it open, holding it out like a shield. Inside the locket were two identical newborn baby photos.

Tears immediately flooded Clara’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks. The world around her blurred into a deafening silence. Leo began to cry, pulling at her arm.

"Mom, tell me what this means. Why does he have my face?"
he sobbed. Clara could only stare, her soul shattering as she realized the ghost of her past had just stepped into the light.
