The Man I Loved Walked Past Me in New York Like a Complete Stranger
Previously: Clara stood frozen on a busy Manhattan street when she saw Leo, the fiancé who had vanished a year ago. But as he walked past, his eyes were completely blank.
The Shadows of the Past
Panic surged through Clara, replacing her shock with a desperate, frantic energy. She spun around and pushed through the oncoming crowd, ignoring the angry shouts of busy New Yorkers. She followed the glimpse of his dark suit until she saw him heading toward the grand, marble entrance of a prestigious corporate tower. She ran, her boots clicking loudly against the concrete, and grabbed his sleeve just before he crossed the threshold.
"Leo, please! Stop!" she cried, her voice cracking with raw emotion.
Leo stopped and turned, his brows furrowing in deep confusion. He looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then up at her tear-stained face. There was no warmth in his eyes, only the cold politeness of a businessman dealing with an interruption.

"Can I help you, miss?" he asked, his tone completely formal. "I'm afraid I'm running late for a meeting."
Clara felt as if the ground were opening beneath her feet. "Leo, it's me. Clara. Your fiancée. We lived together in Astoria for three years. Please, tell me this is a sick joke."
Before Leo could respond, the screech of tires cut through the street noise. A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb, and a sharply dressed woman stepped out. It was Victoria, Leo’s wealthy, domineering mother. Her face paled with fury when she saw Clara. She marched over, thrusting herself between them.
"Get away from him!" Victoria hissed, signaling two security guards near the glass doors. "Leo, get inside. This is the unstable woman the doctors warned us about."
Leo looked bewildered, rubbing his temples as if a sudden migraine had struck him. "Mother, who is she? She knows my name. She says we..."
"She is a liar looking for a payout, Leo," Victoria interrupted smoothly, guiding her son toward the doors. She turned to Clara, her eyes flashing with venomous triumph. "He has retrograde amnesia from the crash, Clara. He doesn't remember a single day of the last five years. I burned your letters, and I sold your apartment. He is marrying someone of his own social standing next month. If you ever come near him again, I will destroy you."
”If you ever come near him again, I will destroy you."
