Ethan had spent fifteen years in the rugged wilderness of Montana, but he had never experienced a winter as brutal as this one. The temperature had plummeted far below freezing, turning the vast landscape into a silent, frozen wasteland. On an overcast morning, while checking the boundary lines near Blackwood Lake, a sound broke the silence—a desperate, high-pitched whimpering that cut straight to his heart. Following the sound, Ethan walked onto the slick, groaning surface of the lake, where the ice was dangerously thin.

There, trapped in a jagged hole of dark, freezing water, was a massive grey wolf. The animal was clawing frantically at the slippery edges, its strength rapidly failing as hypothermia set in. Any sensible woodsman would have kept their distance, knowing the danger of a wild predator. But looking into the wolf’s terrified amber eyes, Ethan saw only a living creature fighting for its life. "Come on, come on, you can do it!" he shouted.

With one final, desperate heave, the wolf was dragged onto the solid ice, and Ethan fell backward, completely exhausted. As he lay there gasping for air, the rescued wolf collapsed beside me.
