The Man Who Sent Me to Prison Slept Peacefully Until My Sudden Return
Previously: Ten years ago, Jack took the blame for a fatal accident to save his best friend, Luke. Now, Jack is back, and he wants the one thing Luke can never give back: his life.
The Cost of a Lie
Luke took a frantic step forward, his eyes darting toward the main office windows. "Look, Jack, we can talk about this," he whispered desperately, his hands shaking as he reached into his pocket. "I know I owe you. I know I made mistakes. I can set you up with a new life. A million dollars, clean and tax-free. You can leave this state, start over, and never have to look back."
Jack let out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed off the metal shipping containers. "A million dollars?" Jack asked, his voice dripping with venom. "Is that what ten years of my life is worth to you, Luke? Is that what Sarah was worth?"

Before Luke could answer, the heavy metal door of the office creaked open. Sarah stepped out into the dusty yard, holding a folder of invoices. She stopped mid-stride, her eyes widening as they landed on Jack. The color drained from her face, and the papers slipped from her fingers, scattering across the dry earth. She had been told that Jack had abandoned her, fleeing the state after a hit-and-run accident. For a decade, she had lived with the grief and anger of that abandonment, eventually finding comfort in Luke's arms.
"Jack?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and disbelief. "It can't be you. Luke said you ran away... he said you left me."
Luke rushed to her side, grabbing her arm. "Sarah, go back inside! He's dangerous. He's just trying to extort us!" he pleaded, his voice cracking with panic. But Jack didn't move. Slowly, he reached into his heavy coat and pulled out a faded, yellowed piece of paper. It was a handwritten confession Luke had penned the night of the accident, a desperate plea for Jack to take the fall, promising to tell Sarah the truth later. It was the one piece of evidence Luke thought had been destroyed years ago.
