The Poisoned Toast

The afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the manicured lawns of the Whispering Pines estate. It was a high-society garden banquet designed to celebrate the upcoming union of Victor Vance, a prominent real estate mogul, and Penelope Sterling, a woman whose elegance was matched only by her mysterious past. Guests in pastel suits and silk dresses chatted amiably, sipping vintage champagne. Victor, looking sharp in his tailored blue suit, smiled warmly at his beautiful fiancée, who stood radiant in a white linen dress.

Just as Victor raised his glass to offer a toast, the tranquil atmosphere was shattered. A disheveled young boy with messy light brown hair burst through the rose bushes. His clothes were soiled, a stark contrast to the immaculate luxury surrounding him. He sprinted toward the head table, his chest heaving, pointing a trembling finger directly at Victor’s plate.

"Don't eat that! She put something in the food!" the boy screamed, his voice cutting through the polite chatter like a siren.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Penelope’s pristine smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of cold fury. She stood up so quickly her chair nearly toppled over.

"Security, get that kid out of here!" she commanded, her voice sharp and frantic. "He is trespassing and disrupting our event!"

Victor’s personal bodyguard, Logan, a towering man with a stern face, stepped forward. But instead of grabbing the boy, Logan hesitated. He looked at the child, then at Penelope’s pale, sweat-slicked face. Logan leaned down and whispered in Victor's ear.

"Sir, the boy is telling the truth. I saw her hovering over your plate with a small glass vial just before the guests sat down."

Victor’s blood ran cold. He stared at Penelope, who was visibly trembling. Before anyone could move, the boy, Henry, pointed directly at Penelope's designer white handbag resting on the table.

"There's a photo in her purse of the man she did this for!" Henry yelled, his eyes wide with desperate urgency.

Penelope lunged forward, screaming in absolute panic, "No! Don't open it!" But Victor was already moving, his hand clamping down on the white leather purse.
