The Secret in the Silk
Victor ripped the zipper open, ignoring Penelope’s desperate attempts to snatch the bag back. Inside, his fingers brushed against a cold glass vial containing a clear, odorless liquid. Beside it lay a folded, glossy photograph. Victor pulled it out and unfolded it. The face staring back at him was one he had hoped never to see again. It was Julian, his estranged half-brother who had disappeared five years ago after a failed attempt to bankrupt Victor's company.
On the back of the photo, a message was scrawled in hurried blue ink: "Finish him, and our son gets everything. Love, Julian."

Victor felt the ground shift beneath his feet. He looked from the photograph to Penelope, whose tears were now carving tracks through her expensive makeup. Finally, his eyes fell upon the young boy, Henry. The child’s messy light brown hair and striking green eyes were a mirror image of Julian’s. The terrifying truth clicked into place.
"He is your son," Victor said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "The child you told me had died in the orphanage years ago. You lied about everything."
Penelope fell to her knees, clutching at Victor's trousers. "Victor, please! Julian forced me! He threatened to take Henry away from me forever if I didn't help him!" she sobbed, her elegant facade completely shattered.
But Henry stepped forward, his small fists clenched. "That's a lie!" the boy shouted. "She came to the foster home last week. I heard her telling Julian that once Victor was out of the picture, they would inherit the entire estate and live like royalty. She didn't want me. She just used me as an excuse!"
Before Victor could process the depth of this betrayal, a shadow fell over the garden path. The guests parted in terror as a man in a dark coat stepped out from the estate's private pavilion. It was Julian, and he was holding a heavy black pistol.
"Step away from my son, Victor," Julian sneered, leveling the weapon at his brother's chest. "This party is over."
