Previously: When a ruthless debt collector corners Elena in a dilapidated warehouse, he thinks she is an easy target. He has no idea about the powerful family legacy she carries.

Marcus rubbed his reddened forearm, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief. The two henchmen straightened up, their hands instinctively moving toward their waistbands. The atmosphere in the warehouse shifted from mocking amusement to tense, lethal anticipation.

The Mark of the Wolf

"Where did you learn to move like that?" Marcus demanded, his voice losing its smug confidence.

Elena didn't answer. Instead, she reached slowly into the inner pocket of her black leather jacket. She pulled out a heavy silver signet ring, the only inheritance her father had left her. She held it up, letting the harsh overhead light illuminate the intricate crest of a double-headed wolf.

The moment Marcus saw the silver ring, the color drained from his face.

"The Petrov Syndicate..." Marcus whispered, taking a step back. "That's... that's the founder's mark. But he died ten years ago."

"He didn't die," Elena said, her voice echoing with a cold authority that surprised even herself. "He went into hiding to protect me from the traitors who ruined his empire. And now, you've brought me right back to where I belong."

The realization hit Marcus like a physical blow. He wasn't dealing with a helpless debtor's daughter; he was standing in front of the heir to the most feared underground syndicate in the state. If she walked out of this warehouse, his life, and the lives of his men, would be forfeit.

"If I let you leave, I'm a dead man anyway," Marcus muttered, his eyes turning wild and desperate.

He drew a heavy black pistol from his waistband, pointing it directly at her chest. The two henchmen on the stairs drew their weapons as well, aiming down at her from the landing.

Elena was unarmed, cornered in a dilapidated warehouse with three desperate men who had nothing left to lose. One pull of the trigger, and her father's legacy would die with her.
