Previously: Years after her wealthy family disowned her for choosing military service over high society, Sarah returns to their elite gala in full uniform, holding the key to their entire financial future.

The Confrontation behind the Curtain

The moment the formal ceremony paused for dinner, Richard and Eleanor practically lunged from their seats. They intercepted Sarah near the backstage corridor, away from the prying eyes of the press. Richard’s face was flushed a deep, angry red, his breathing heavy beneath his tailored tuxedo. Eleanor fluttered behind him, looking frantically around to ensure no journalists were following them.

"What is the meaning of this charade, Sarah?" Richard hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and fear. "How dare you show up here in a fake uniform, trying to humiliate us? Do you have any idea who is in this room?"

Sarah looked at her father, feeling a strange sense of detachment. The man who had once terrified her now seemed incredibly small. "It is not a charade, Richard," she said calmly. "And the uniform is very real. I earned every single stripe and medal on it."

Eleanor stepped forward, her voice a desperate whisper. "Sarah, please. We can talk about the past later. But right now, you are ruining the most important night of our lives. Vance Enterprises is on the verge of securing a massive government defense contract. If the board sees you causing a scene, it could ruin everything. Please, just slip out the back door."

Sarah let out a soft, cold laugh. It was a sound that made Richard flinch. "You still don't get it, do you?" she asked, looking between them. "I didn't sneak in here to ruin your night. I was invited. In fact, I am the keynote speaker tonight."

Richard scoffed, trying to regain his dominant posture. "Don't be ridiculous. The keynote speaker is the newly appointed chairperson of the military procurement committee. We've been trying to get a meeting with them for months."

Sarah reached into her pocket and pulled out her official credential badge, holding it up for them to see. The bold black letters spelled out her name and her official title as the head of the procurement committee.

"I am the chairperson," Sarah said, watching the color completely drain from her father's face. "The fate of your company is in my hands."
