They Mocked Her At The Firing Range, Unaware Of Her Secret Identity
The Challenge on the Firing Line
The heat of the Nevada desert was suffocating, rising in wavy sheets of distortion from the cracked earth. Under the shade of the wooden canopy at the Vance Tactical shooting range, the air smelled of dry dust and gun oil. Megan stood quietly by the wooden platform, her light-brown hair tied back, wearing a simple dark blue sweater that looked entirely out of place among the tactical gear and combat boots surrounding her. She looked like a woman who had lost her way, which was exactly what the men present wanted to believe.
Steve, the chief instructor, stood with his arms crossed over his grey tactical shirt. His cap was pulled low, and his dark sunglasses completely hid his eyes, but his sneer was impossible to miss. To him, Megan was just another desperate civilian trying to pass a test she had no business taking. He kicked the dirt, looking at the heavy bolt-action rifle resting in its case.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line,"
Steve said, his voice echoing in the quiet desert. The spectators behind him chuckled, murmuring among themselves. They expected her to bruise her shoulder, drop the weapon, or cry. Megan did not say a word. She stepped forward and lifted the rifle. Steve watched her closely, his tone dripping with mock concern.
"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it,"
he added, pointing downrange toward the spinning metal targets.
Megan didn't flinch. She raised the rifle, aligning her eye with the iron sights. With a smooth, practiced motion that stunned the onlookers, she pulled the trigger. Bang! The rifle roared, and a split second later, a loud metallic clang echoed back. The target was spinning. Before anyone could react, she cycled the bolt with mechanical precision and fired again. Bang! Another hit.
Steve froze, his smirk instantly vanishing. He stepped forward, staring downrange in utter disbelief.
"Did she hit both?"
he asked, his voice suddenly tight. Megan calmly cycled the bolt, looking at him with cold, unwavering eyes.
"You gave me seven shots,"
she replied. Without pausing, she raised the weapon and fired five more times in rapid succession, shattering the silence of the desert.
