Previously: When Megan walked onto the dusty desert shooting range, the instructors laughed at her. But as she picked up the rifle, they realized they had underestimated the wrong woman.

The General's Legacy

The older man was Arthur Vance, the CEO of Vance Tactical and the former commander of Megan’s late father. He walked with a military posture, his eyes locked onto Marcus. The corrupt deputy's smirk began to falter as Arthur stepped between him and Megan, holding up the manila folder.

"Actually, Deputy, there is a great deal she can do,"

Arthur said, his voice like iron.

"And more importantly, there is a great deal I can do. You see, Marcus, you forgot that this entire county doesn't belong to your sheriff's department. And you certainly forgot who Megan's father was."

Arthur opened the folder, pulling out a stack of certified documents and a flash drive.

"This folder contains the complete federal investigation into your offshore accounts, your illegal wiretapping of Megan's phone, and the bribes you paid to the family court judge,"

Arthur continued, his voice echoing across the silent range.

"The FBI has already signed the warrants. Your badge is gone, Marcus. And so is your custody of Lily."

Marcus’s face turned a sickly shade of grey. He reached instinctively for his sidearm, but the sound of six bolt-action rifles being chambered by the range spectators behind him stopped him cold. Steve and the other instructors were now aiming directly at him. They might have been arrogant, but they were honorable men, and they had just realized they had been manipulated by a corrupt cop to hurt the daughter of a military legend.

Two federal vehicles pulled onto the gravel lot, their sirens silent but lights flashing. Within minutes, a trembling Marcus was placed in handcuffs and led away, his reign of terror finally over. Arthur turned to Megan, a warm, proud smile softening his weathered face.

"Your father would be proud of those seven shots, Megan,"

Arthur said softly, handing her the custody papers.

"Welcome to the firm. Your office is waiting, and your daughter is coming home."

Holding the papers to her chest, Megan finally let a tear slip down her cheek, knowing that her long, painful battle was over and her daughter was safe in her arms once again.

Sometimes, the fiercest warriors are the ones fighting quietly in the shadows for the people they love, and justice always finds a way to level the playing field.
