The Firing Line

The desert heat radiated off the dusty ground, shimmering in waves under the relentless midday sun. Jessica stood quietly under the shade of the wooden roof structure, her strawberry blonde hair tied back, wearing a simple navy fleece jacket. Around her, seasoned tactical shooters laughed and chatted, adjusting their expensive gear. To them, she looked completely out of place—a fragile amateur who had wandered onto the wrong field.

Ryan, the lead instructor, walked over with a slow, deliberate stride. Clad in black tactical gear, a matching cap, and dark sunglasses that obscured his eyes, he radiated authority. He stopped by the long wooden table and looked down at Jessica with a smug, patronizing smile.

"Seven shots," Ryan said, his voice carrying across the quiet range. "Show us you belong on this firing line."

Jessica didn't reply. Her calm expression didn't flicker. She reached down to the heavy case on the table, unlatched it, and lifted a massive bolt-action rifle. The weapon was heavy, weathered, and powerful.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks," Ryan warned, crossing his arms. "Right in the center, if you can find it."

A few onlookers chuckled, expecting the recoil to knock her off her feet. Jessica ignored them. She braced the rifle against her shoulder, her posture instantly shifting into a flawless, professional stance. She aligned her sights with a tiny, spinning metal target placed hundreds of yards downrange.

She squeezed the trigger. A deafening roar shattered the desert quiet. Before the echo could even fade, a sharp, metallic clang rang out. The target spun violently.

Ryan’s smile vanished. He stared downrange, stunned.

"Did she hit both?" he muttered to himself.

Without a word, Jessica calmly cycled the bolt, ejecting the smoking brass casing with a crisp metallic click.

"You gave me seven shots," she said softly.

She aimed again and fired. Another perfect hit. Then another. Seven shots, seven flawless impacts, leaving the entire range in absolute, breathless silence.
