Previously: When Ashley stepped onto the dusty desert shooting range, the instructors laughed. But they had no idea who she really was—or the dangerous secret she was running from.

The Final Stand

Mike didn't hesitate. He stepped fully between Ashley and the deputies. "You don't have jurisdiction here, Vance," Mike said calmly. "And more importantly, every single square inch of this range is being recorded by high-definition security cameras. If you take her by force without a federal warrant, it’s kidnapping on camera."

Vance’s face darkened, but before he could command his deputies to move, Ashley stepped out from behind Mike. She pulled a small, rugged smartphone from her pocket. She wasn't the weak woman Marcus had discarded years ago.

"I didn't just run, Vance," Ashley said, her voice echoing across the quiet range. "The files on that flash drive? I uploaded them to a secure cloud server. If I don't enter a safety code every twenty-four hours, they are automatically sent to the FBI and the federal prosecutor."

Vance froze. The smug grin wiped completely off his face. He realized the leverage he thought he held was entirely gone. If he arrested her now, the timer would run out, and Marcus's entire empire would crumble.

"Tell Marcus that if my daughter isn't delivered to this range within two hours, I'll stop entering the code," Ashley declared, her eyes burning with fierce maternal resolve.

Vance stared at her, realizing he had lost. He cursed under his breath, turned on his heel, and gestured for his deputies to retreat. The SUV sped away, leaving a trail of dust in its wake.

Two hours later, a taxi arrived at the range. Out stepped little Lily, running straight into Ashley’s arms. Mike watched the tearful reunion, a soft smile finally breaking through his tough exterior.

"You've got a hell of an aim, Ashley," Mike said, handing her a custom instructor badge. "And we could use someone with your courage around here."

Ashley smiled, hugging her daughter tightly. She had finally stopped running, ready to build a safe, new life on her own terms.
