The heavy silence of Courtroom 4B was suffocating. Clara sat at the defense table, her fingers tracing the polished mahogany grain as she prepared herself for the worst. Wearing a charcoal grey suit that felt like armor, she stared at the jury. For three weeks, she had maintained a falsehood, claiming she was responsible for the tragic fall that killed her husband, Thomas. She had done it to protect her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Lily, believing the child had accidentally pushed him during a frantic argument. Clara was ready to trade her freedom for Lily’s future.

But destiny had other plans. Just as the prosecutor prepared to deliver his closing remarks, the heavy double doors of the courtroom burst open. A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. "My dad recorded everything," Lily stated.
