Previously: Clara was ready to plead guilty to protect her stepdaughter from a tragic mistake, but a sudden, dramatic courtroom interruption with a pink recorder changed everything.

The Voice from the Grave

The courtroom fell into a dead, breathless silence. Judge Helen gestured to the bailiff to bring the pink recorder to the bench, but Lily insisted on pressing the play button herself. With a trembling thumb, she clicked the device. A loud hiss of static filled the room, followed by the unmistakable, resonant voice of Thomas. Clara closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes at the sound of her late husband's voice.

But Thomas wasn't arguing with Clara, nor was he speaking to Lily. He was in his study, and another man was shouting at him.

"You can't prove anything, Thomas! If this audit goes through, I lose everything!" the recorded voice yelled. It was Richard.

The gallery erupted into murmurs. Richard, sitting in the front row, stood up, his face drained of all color. He took a step backward toward the exit, but two armed bailiffs immediately blocked his path.

The recording continued to play. The sound of a violent scuffle was captured clearly—grunts of exertion, the shattering of a glass vase, and Thomas screaming,

"Get off me, Richard! No!"

Then came the sickening sound of the balcony wooden railing splintering, followed by a fading cry and a dull, distant thud. On the recording, Richard’s heavy breathing could be heard, followed by his hurried footsteps leaving the study. There was no sign of Clara, and no sign of Lily. The truth was laid bare for the entire court: Richard had pushed Thomas to his death to cover up his multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme.

Clara stared at Richard in absolute shock. The guilt she had carried, the agonizing sacrifice she had been prepared to make, vanished in an instant. She looked at Lily, realizing her stepdaughter had never been in danger of being a killer; she had simply been a witness to a monster's crime.
