The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Plaza ballroom cast a warm, amber glow over the city’s elite, but to Lydia, the light felt like a spotlight on her isolation. For years, her stepfather Charles and his daughter Victoria had treated her as an embarrassing secret. They tolerated her presence only to maintain the facade of a unified, charitable family. Tonight was Victoria’s grand engagement gala, and Lydia had been explicitly warned to stay in the shadows, dressed in a simple, high-collared white blouse that concealed the physical remnants of her past.

A Cruel Exposure

But Victoria’s malice knew no bounds. Cornering Lydia near the center of the bustling dance floor, Victoria sneered, her voice dripping with venom.

"You don't belong here, Lydia. Look at you, trying to blend in with royalty when you’re nothing but a charity case,"
she hissed. Before Lydia could turn away, Victoria’s manicured hands gripped the collar of Lydia’s blouse and tore it open with a violent tug, exposing her bare back to the entire room.

A collective gasp rippled through the high-society crowd. Etched into Lydia's skin were thick, jagged, stitched cross scars—the brutal markings of a mortar blast.

"Look at her!"
Victoria shouted mockingly, pointing a finger.
"She's nothing but ugly scars!"
Humiliation burned in Lydia’s chest, tears welling in her eyes as the elite whispered in disgust.

Stepfather Charles stepped forward, his face pale with embarrassment for his brand.

"Security, get her out of here!"
he commanded, eager to sweep Lydia away. But before the guards could move, the grand oak doors swung open. Admiral Vance, a legendary and highly decorated commander, marched in. Ignoring the wealthy hosts, he stopped directly in front of Lydia, raised his hand, and delivered a crisp salute.
"Captain Sterling, welcome home,"
he declared, leaving the room in stunned silence.
