They Mocked My Scars at a High-Society Gala, but a General's Salute Changed Everything
The Scars of Honor
The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate was a sea of glittering diamonds, gold-threaded silk, and the quiet clink of crystal champagne flutes. For five years, I had been dead to this world. My stepfather, Richard, had cast me out when I chose a life of service over the arranged marriage he had planned to secure his business empire. Tonight, I returned not as a socialite, but as a ghost seeking peace. I only wanted my late mother’s personal diary and her wedding ring, items Richard had spitefully locked away.
But peace was a luxury my stepsister, Evelyn, refused to grant me. Wearing a radiant gold silk gown, she intercepted me in the center of the ballroom, her eyes gleaming with malice.

"Look what crawled out of the trenches," Evelyn sneered, her voice carrying over the chamber music. "Did you think you could just slip in here dressed like a pauper, Elena?"
Before I could step back, Evelyn’s manicured hands lunged forward. With a sharp, violent tug, she ripped open my white silk shirt. The fabric tore down my spine, exposing the thick, jagged, stitched cross scars that spanned my back—the brutal remnants of a combat explosion. The ballroom erupted into shocked whispers and gasps of disgust.
"Look at her!" Evelyn laughed mockingly. "She's nothing but scars! A complete monster!"
Richard stepped forward, his face hardened in disgust. "Security, get her out of here!" he commanded. But as the guards approached, the heavy oak doors swung open. General Vance, a legendary four-star commander, marched in. He bypassed the security, walked straight to me, and snapped a crisp, respectful salute.
"Captain Sterling, welcome home," the General declared, his voice echoing through the stunned silence.
