Previously: Marcus poured his soul into his restaurant, only to discover his wife and business partner were plotting to steal it all. His final dish would change everything.

A Bitter Recipe

Marcus stood frozen as the busy kitchen buzzed around him. He stared at the glowing screen, his chest tightening. Unlocking the phone with Julian’s predictable passcode, Marcus scrolled through the messages. The betrayal was absolute. For six months, Sarah and Julian had been secretly negotiating to sell the restaurant’s intellectual property—including all of Marcus's signature recipes—to a massive corporate conglomerate. They were planning to kick him out of his own kitchen the very next morning, leaving him with nothing but a mountain of joint debt.

The door to the kitchen swung open, and Julian walked back in, a smug smile plastered across his face. "Vance is loving the appetizers, Marcus! We're on the cusp of greatness," Julian said, clapping him on the back. Marcus felt a wave of nausea but forced a tight nod, quickly slipping Julian’s phone back onto the counter.

"I need to check on the dry storage," Marcus muttered, his voice strained.

Instead, Marcus slipped into the back office. He bypassed the digital files and went straight for Julian’s locked filing cabinet. Using a heavy butter knife from his pocket, he forced the lock open. Inside, tucked within a blue folder, was the physical contract. It was fully signed by Sarah and Julian, scheduled for execution the following morning. Marcus’s hands shook with rage. His wife, the woman he shared a bed with, and his childhood best friend had systematically stripped him of his life's work.

Suddenly, the office door handle jiggled. Sarah stepped in, her eyes narrowing as she saw Marcus standing near the desk. "What are you doing in here? Vance just finished his main course and is asking to see the genius behind the menu," she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. Marcus slipped the documents inside his chef's coat. "I'm ready," Marcus said quietly. "Let's go present the final course."
